A rotary wing aircraft, is a heavier-than-air flying machine that generates lift using rotating airfoils or rotor blades, which rotate around a mast. Several rotor blades mounted on a single mast are called rotors. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) defines a rotorcraft as a "rotor supported in flight by the reaction of air on one or more rotors".
Rotorcraft typically include aircraft in which one or more rotors provide lift throughout the flight, such as helicopters, rotorcraft and gyros. Composite rotorcraft enhance the rotor with additional thrust engines, propellers or static lifting surfaces.
